I was seven years old when the first Star Wars movie first appeared in theaters in 1977. Like the rest of the kids in the US, my imagination was captured! I remember my dad taking me to see the movie. I think he could have cared less, but between my brother and I we thought that it was the greatest film ever. My fandom started there. I really loved the mythos of the Star Wars franchise. Even as I grew older, I kept up with whatever Lucasfilm was offering!
I am a lover of the old trilogy and prefer them over the prequels. My favorite film is Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. Empire stands out among all the films to date. Everything was right about that movie. To this day, I watch that movie and have no reason to believe that Mark Hamill isn't talking to a puppet! I also think the Special Edition really added some necessary subtle changes. Cloud City, for example is really opened up. I appreciate those changes. The dialogue and acting in these films were well done also. As Star Wars films go, the acting can be average or mediocre at best, but Empire really brought out the best in every actor and actress. I'm not sure why, I just think it worked well...
As a child, I also owned a ton of Star Wars toys and propaganda. We didn't have everything that Kenner put out in the Sears catalog, but we sure did have a fun time playing with what we did get!! (By the way -- I still have that collection!) To say that I was obsessed with the Wars was an understatement. My family really likes to remind me of this. Say it proud, say it loud...
Overall they were good, wholesome movies which we grew up with that captured our imagination. My mom used to say that she was alright with my obsession because I could be into so many other bad things, like drugs. Star Wars was my drug! Anyway, they were stories of good versus evil, adventure, and friends. There was also a mystery of the background of all of these characters which was later clarified in the prequels. There was even a mystery to the movies. There wasn't any internet in those days and it was difficult to find information in those early days. Lucasfilm was tight lipped about the movies and all you had to go by was Starlog magazine or things that would be released on TV. Now, everything will spoil the movie!!!
Speaking of...Episode 7!! I can't wait to see this movie. I am hoping it isn't cut from the same template as the prequels were: Too much CG and not enough on the story/character development. I know that the release date has been pushed back but I don't mind if they are going to make a fabulous movie. I'm not overly impressed with JJ Abrams at the helm. I liked his Star Trek movies but I didn't love them. I think they should have given John Favaro a chance. The Iron Man films were amazing. There was character development and story in the midst of some really awesome special effects.
OK, so what are your thoughts or opinions? Do you agree or disagree? I would love to hear from fellow fans of the Wars and start a dialog here.
